What makes BPA so harmful?

I’ve had a Nalgene bottle for years that I used before the whole BPA scare and I’m wondering if it is still really bad to use.

initially, BPA was introduced as an estrogen-mimicking agent. In high levels, it can cause heart problems, and has been linked to certain types of cancer (prostate and breast which may be attributed to hormone imbalance). It also has the capability of distorting infant development. BPA is more likely to leach into the water when the plastic is warm or hot. It has been said that BPA won’t hurt you in small amounts, however I do think that substances have the potential to build in your body. Therefore, it might be better to be safe than sorry.
