Certain kinds of birds have evolved to have bright feathers, and its got everything to do with ATTRACTION…and SEX. Like flowers whose bright colors attract the insects who pollinate them, birds have bright colors and patterns to attract a mate. Since it’s generally the males who compete for the attention of a female, male birds are usually bright colored where females of the same species are plain. Cardinals, mallard ducks, finches, and parakeets are all examples of birds whose females are a pleasant brown at best, while the makes are all kinds of green, yellow, and red.
These bright colors make them more conspicuous to predators and their showy plumage isn’t always practical, but it helps them get the girl.
