You are probably thinking of the Baobab or Monkey Beard tree (genus Adansonia, Latinized form of Adanson, name of the botonist who discovered it). There are ten species of Baobabs in Africa, and the tree has become synonymous with the Sudan in the same way that tamarisks are synonymous with the Crescent Valley. Baobabs are huge and lovely. Some of them are over 190 feet around with bleak and majestic branches.
