The largest contribution of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere comes from burning coal for electricity and industry, and coal plants are the single most important contributor to global warming – both in the US and worldwide. For this reason, the most effective thing we could do to halt global warming and clean up carbon from the atmosphere is to shut down the fleet of existing coal plants. Every state in the US relies on coal for part of its electricity needs, and most states have at least one coal plant located within their borders. At one of the links cited below, you can find information about many of the existing coal plants in the US, and get involved in the fight to shut these polluting plants down.
