The giant panda survives on a diet of almost exclusively bamboo. However, being bears, panda’s still have the digestive system of a carnivorous animal, meaning they can access almost no protein from bamboo. Because of their low-nutrition diet, pandas are careful not to waste energy in their daily habits. Pandas have been known to avoid steep hillsides for this reason.
Giant pandas may eat meat or fish when available.
Panda bears mostly eat bamboo leaves from 10 different species of bamboo plants, though they can eat the shoots and leaves from up to 40 different species. Wild pandas will sometimes eat carrion (dead animals). Captive pandas will be fed fruit in addition to bamboo.
