What gases are produced due to this acid rain?
Pollution from the coal plants in Mpumalanga probably is the main culprit. The power plants produce 64% of South Africa’s energy. The document linked below has some informative information about acid rain including: “Burning of fossil fuels like oil and coal in power plants, various industrial processes and the exhaust fumes from millions of vehicles contribute to the large amount of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.” When these gases combine with water and sunlight, acid rain precipitates.
Soweto like every other country has some natural resources that when exploited give rise to sulphur, nitrates, nitrites, carbons and many other elements that combine with hydrogen to give rise to acid.
