What made Detroit popular for car manufacturing?

Detroit became the car manufacturing capitol mostly by chance. Ford, Olds, and Leland, three of the biggest names in car manufacturing, all came from this area. Detroit also was a large railroad hub and had many shops and foundries that would support the car industry. Once other car manufacturers began to produce like Ford did, they all built assmbly line plants in Detroit; and thus the motor city was born.
