Lowland is a general term used in geography to describe a lower tier. For instance, the Scottish Highlands are complemented by the Scottish Lowlands. In ecology, lowland habitats are the ecosystems that develop along rivers as they reach their broad and wandering phases after departing from the mountains. The Amazon represents an excellent example of a river lowland habitat in all its splendor.
