A lipid is a fat, wax, or sterol molecule.  Biologically, lipids function in energy storage systems and as signalling molecules.  Chemically, lipids are distinguised by long glyceride chains made up of alternating hydrophillic (water-loving) and hyrdophobic (water-repelling) components.
