What is linoleum made of? Should I spring for the more expensive tile floors instead?

Genuine linoleum is made using linseed oil, wood or cork powder, ground limestone, resins, and mineral pigments. Vinyl is sometimes confused with genuine linoleum so make sure the product you are getting is actually genuine linoleum. You do not have to spring for expensive tile you can go for bamboo flooring which comes in many different styles and designs.

Believe it or not, linoleum is actually one of the more environmentally friendly building materials. It is made primarily of linseed oil and a mixture of ground cork, wood, resins, and limestone. The main detractor is how it looks and perhaps its longevity. Tile floors are surely very nice but if you are looking for an environmentally friendly solution, go with linoleum.

Linoleum is not  a trademarked name, and vinyl materials such as portland1983 describes can be (and are) called linoleum.
