Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed mostly of mineral calcite and sometimes it is almost pure calcite. Most limestone is made up of many other minerals such as silica and sand as well though, these are referred to as dirty limestones. The primary source of the calcite in the limestone is typically marine organisms.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is composed of calcite and argonite.  There are fossiliferous limestones as well, such as chalk, which is made up of microscopic shells.  Limestone is oftentimes found where the environment used to be marine.
