This link provides a really straightforward, easy to understand description of the lifecycle of star. Basically, a star is a product of a mass of gas and particles contracting together by its own gravity and, as a result, becoming so warm that the hydrogen particles in the mass begins fusing together to make helium. This generates lots of energy and the star, as we know it, shines brightly until it runs out of hydrogen. The death of a star may end spectacularly into a Supergiant or quietly as a Dwarf star.
