The oxygen content of water, or Dissolved Oxygen (DO) can vary greatly and does not necessarily have any bearing on the safety of a water source.
DO can be measured with a digital instrument specifically made to measure dissolved oxygen.
However, there can be problems associated with very high DO water supplies which could contribute to unsafe conditions. High DO water can be the result of many conditions, some of which can also be conducive to the growth of algae and microorganisms. Moreover, high DO water sources can cause certain types of pipes and other vessels to oxidize more quickly than normal, often resulting in rust. Low DO can present problems to aquatic populations as well.
