What is LEED-certification?

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is an internationally-recognized third-party green building certification system started in March of 2000 by the United States Green Building Council.  Most building types (offices, retail, institutional, residential) are eligible to apply for LEED certification as long as they meet a certain set of prerequisites that includes features such as

    • Water Use Reduction
    • Minimum Energy Performance
    • Construction Activity Pollution Prevention

A building is evaluated using a committee-established LEED rating system that considers its construction and usage type.  If it meets all prerequisites and is given a minimum number of points on a 100-point scale, the building is granted certification.
