What is the least energy-efficient crop to grow?

Cotton crops grown in the San Joaquin Valley of California are extremely expensive to grow. Cotton is a very water-intensive plant and this area requires heavy irrigation to meet water demands. It also requires an increasing amount of pesticide use. Hopefully, more sustainable ways of cotton growing can be found.
