Most oil is found in the porous rock regions of the Earth’s crust’s upper layer. These regions can be found under land masses or under the ocean’s surface. It’s estimated that we are drilling an astounding 1.2 trillion barrels of oil each day.
We are certainly not drilling 1.2 trillion barrels of oil each day; we are not even producing anything like that amount. Current oil production from the entire world is about 85 million barrels per day. Many estimates say that something like 1.2 trillion barrels is the total amount of oil produced in the entire history of world oil production.
Generally, but not exclusively, in sedimentary rocks. Generally, but not exclusively, oil is generated from depths shallower than about 15,000 to 18,000 feet, so most oil is shallower than that.
