In 2007 a push for polar research was initiated between 63 countries, employing 50,000 scientists to investigate climate change in polar regions over the course of two years, backed by a 350 million dollar initiative. The Arctic and Antarctic expeditions involved airplanes and submarines as well as satellites. It is believed that polar research will be the key to better understanding global climate change.
