One of the largest stranding in 20 years occurred in January 2005. The Fisheries Services reported that 33 pilot whales, two pygmy sperm whales, and a minke whale all became stranded. There is speculation that navy ships using sonar in the area the day prior may have been the cause because it was determined that most of the whales were healthy.
