The Galapagos tortoise is the biggest breed of tortoise in the world, yet it is still legal to own one. They’re not dangerous to people or the environment, they’re not considered pests, and they do not have any known diseases that are able to be spread. They are expensive, but other than that, they are relatively easy to obtain and take care of. The only problem you may encounter is that, due to their level of endangerment, there are laws and restrictions preventing international/interstate trade. If you wish to purchase one out of state, you will have to obtain a permit first.
Laws regarding what types of turtles are available as pets and size requirements, etc. differ by states. Therefore, you should check your state laws in order to find out the requirements and/or regulations surrounding pet turtles.
