What is the largest turtle in the world?

Leatherback turtles are the largest turtle overall, as ziapan already noted. The largest species of freshwater turtle is likely (there’s some debate) the Shanghai soft-shell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei), a critically-endangered species in China — only four individuals (2 in Chinese zoos and 2 in Vietnam) are known to exist. Another beast of a turtle is the alligator snapping turtle of southern North America. It’s up there in the “largest freshwater turtle” runnings.
