The tallest tree in the Amazon rainforest, which is the area of most abundant growth in South America, is the Kapok Tree.  It can reach up to 230 ft and and be 9 inches in diameter.

The Kapok is arguably the tallest tree in south America, it was the tallest that I could find in my research.
