Of the 376 extant species of primate in the world, the largest species is the gorilla.  Adult males are generally 5 1/2-6 feet tall with 10 foot arm spans and can weigh up to 400 pounds.  The largest primate ever to have lived alongside humans is believed to be the gigantic ape (Gigantopithecus blackii) who died out around 100,000 years ago.  Gigantopithecus was usually about 10 feet tall and weighed up to 1,200 pounds.
