The largest snake species native to the US is the indigo snake. Indigo snakes can reach lengths of 8.5 feet long. Until last year, the US (particularly the Columbus Zoo) was home to the largest snake in captivity. It was a reticulated python, which are not native to the United States, but it was 24 feet in length and weighed 300 pounds.
The indigo snake, Drymarchon corais couperi, grows to a length of over nine feet.The indigo is found throughout Florida, in southern parts of Georgia and Alabama, and in the extreme southeastern corner of Mississippi.The Eastern Indigo Snake (Drymarchon couperi) is a large nonvenomous snake with an even blue-black coloration, with some specimens having a reddish-orange to tan color on the throat, cheek and chin.
