The largest public works project in America is “the Big Dig,” which is the nickname of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project. It rerouted Interstate 93 (the Central Artery) through the heart of Boston into an underground tunnel, which extends 3.5 miles under the city. It cost about $14.06billion dollars (adjusted to 2006 dollars for inflation) to build. Unfortunately, it has been plagued with problems, ranging from subcontractor fraud to downright unsafe conditions. Tunneling under a city was quite an undertaking, and unfortunately, it would seem that it was a poorly-thought-out project.
