As of April 2, 2010, the Chagos island-chain in the Indian Ocean is the largest marine reserve in the world, covering 210,000 square miles.
In 2008, the country Kirbati declared the world’s largest marine protected area called the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. It is the size of CA and includes reefs and 8 corla atolls.
Even with the increased establishment of marine reserves, less than 1% of the planets oceans are considered protected. The more reserves that are established and maintained, they better protected the biodiversity of the seas will be.
