The Gulf War oil spill in 1991 is the largest oil spill in history in terms of acreage. It spread approximately 4000 square miles, or 2,560,000 acres, in the Persian Gulf.
It should also be noted that the BP oil spill was the second-largest, at about 572 square miles. The most disturbing thing about that Gulf War oil spill was that it was deliberate: Iraqi soldiers opened valves on an offshore oil rig in order to prevent American forces from landing. The oil was 4 inches thinck across the Persian Gulf.
