The Vesta No. 4 mine in California was the largest coal mine in the world, until being closed in 1984. It is owned by the Jones Laughlin Steel Company, and produced 174,338 tons of coal in its first month of operation.

Today, the largest open pit coal mine in the world is the El Cerrejón mine in Colombia. This mine exports some 31 megatons of coal a year.
