There are many different types of mines as well as different ways to measure size of the mine. The largest open-pit copper mine in the world is the Bingham Canyon mine, which is a pit over 0.75 miles deep, 2.5 miles wide, and covering 1,900 acres. The largest diamond mine in the world is probably the Mirna Mine in Russia. One of the largest open-pit coal mines in the world is the mine at Cerrejon in Columbia, which produced 24.9 million tons of coal in 2004.
