There’s a concern that President Obama’s goal of getting 1 million plug-in hybrids on the road in the US might be impeded by the lack of large companies actually producing the batteries needed (most of the ones that make the right kind of batteries are in essence startups). However, a consortium of 14 US technology companies called the National Alliance for Advanced Transporation Battery Cell Manufacture is hoping to pool tgheir resoucres and avail themselves of $1 billion of government funds to start up among other things the first US large-scale lithium ion plant to create the infrastructure necessary to start building hybrids and EVs en masse.
