According to some sources, the largest volcanic island (island formed by volcanic activity) is Iceland at 39,702 sq mi. Others contend that the largest such island is Java, Indonesia, which is in fact larger (138,794 sq mi). Perhaps the controversy is over the exact origin (volcanic, or volcanic with other influences) of Java.
