The largest helicopter every built was the Mil V-12 built in the Soviet Union during the 1960’s. The helicopter was so large that the distance between one rotor disk to the other was greater than the wingspan of a Boeing 747. The V-12 had a maximum take-off weight of 231,485 pounds, and the helicopter still holds the world record for the largest payload (88,635 pounds).
Despite its great size and strength, there were only two V-12’s ever built because the Soviet government believed them to be too inefficient and impractical. However, the V-12 does still hold the Guinness Book of World Records record for largest helicopter.
