Good question, Jay. The largest confirmed great white catch in California that I could verify is a female caught off Anacapa Island, near Ventura, on November 6, 1985. The shark was 5.6 meters (18.48 feet) long. Another notable specimen caught in California was a 5.5 meter (17 foot) female that became entangled in a fishing net and died before fishermen could set it free. By way of comparison, the largest great white ever caught was bagged off Kangaroo Island, South Australia, at a staggering 7 meters (22.97 feet) in 1987.
