The largest single expedition to climb Mt. Everest was a team of mountaineers from the People’s Republic of China, who scaled the mountain from the Tibetan side in 1975 with 410 climbers. (Obviously they did not all go up to the summit at the same time!) One of the purposes of this expedition was to ascertain with precise instruments exactly how tall the mountain really was. In aid of their measurements, the Chinese climbers anchored a camera tripod to the summit, which was still there many years later. The largest number of people ever to summit Everest on a single day was 40, on May 10, 1993.
