The Sanriku earthquake in 1933 measured 8.4 on March 2, 1933. It was located offshore, 290 km east of Kamaishi, Iwate. The earthquake epicenter was far enough away from the town that little damage was done; however, it was followed by a 6.8 aftershock. In total, 76 more aftershocks followed, all with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater, over a six month period. The associated tsunami did cause many damages, destroying homes and causing deaths.
