The largest earthquake in California’s history was the 1857 earthquake in Fort Tejon California, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. Fortunately, the Fort Tejon area was only sparsely populated at the time. The most well-known earth-quake was the 1906 San Fransisco earthquake which killed over 3,000 people and turned much of the city into a bomb-blast. That quake measured 7.7 on the Richter scale.
