West Virginia is the largest coal producing state at 157,778 thousand tons. Following West Virginia is Kentucky (120,323) and Pennsylvania (65,414).
West Virginia is not even close to being the leading coal producing state. Wyoming produces more than twice as much as West Virginia, which is a distant second. I’m citing the same source as the other answer, just scroll down to Wyoming (431 million tons vs 136 million for WV).
