The aptly named Jersey Giant is the largest breed of chicken, with mature roosters weighing in at 13 pounds and hens at 10 pounds. The breed was developed by the Black brothers John and Thomas in New Jersey between 1870 and 1890. They are a dual-purpose breed, which means that they are valued for both their meat and eggs. They are not considered a quick-growing breed, as it takes six months or more for them to fill out their large frame.
