Bald eagles are fish eaters, but will take ducks or other waterfowl if given the chance. Their lifting power is about 4 pounds, so they can’t pick anything too heavy up. There have been cases of eagles drowning because they try to carry a fish that is too heavy for too long and end up being dragged into the ocean. Bald eagles also eat carrion, but that they don’t really have to drag away.
I have seen bald eagles take up some pretty big fish. On the Yellowstone river, bald eagles like to go trout hunting, and I have seen them take up some fish that must be about 3 pounds.
