The Tongass National Forest in southeast Alaska is the largest national forest, although a measurement of “ecologically rich” is more difficult to determine.  The Custer National Forest in Montana and South Dakota is called the “most ecologically diverse forest in the Northern Region.”  (http://www.arborday.org/replanting/pastforests.cfm?forest=Custer)  The Monongahela Forest in West Virginia is called “one of the most ecologically diverse National forests in the country” by the USDA Forest Service website.
