Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, while potential energy is, just that, a potential to have energy/movement. For example, while a ball is bouncing, it has kinetic energy (during the movement). At the very top of its bounce, it will stop for just a brief second, where it has only potential energy. While a car is in motion it has kinetic energy. The battery of the car that is parked, stores potential energy.
