Cleaning the air comes with a cost. Smokestack scrubbers remove sulfur from emissions using a shower of limestone. The byproduct is a non-toxic material called gypsum that is recyclable. Gypsum can be used in concrete as an additive. The trouble is that there does not exist a market for the amount of gypsum that will be produced – more than 300,000 tons per year. Landfills have to be created for the massive amounts of gypsum.
