Drinking water directly from a river or stream can contain a variety of contaminants, depending on the location.  River water can have acid rain, chemical waste, and other toxic materials.  Various waterborne microorganisms can cause diseases.  The hazards of drinking unfiltered water can lead to diarrhea, immune deficiencies, stomach cramps and more.
