Poland, like much of Eastern Europe, suffers from a host of pollution related problems. These resulted from much environmental negligence during key growth and industrialization phases. Areas around Upper Silesia and Krakow are especially polluted; the quality of their water, air, and soil is very poor. As of 1991 5 areas of the country were officially labeled as “ecological disaster areas” because of the horrible environmental conditions. Much of the population lives in these extmremely populated areas, though it is also imortant to note that the entire country suffers from air and water pollution.
