Most plastics that are used in the US come from domestic natural gas.  The natural gas is also combined with petroleum to create PET (polyethylene terephthalate).  About 70% of it comes from natural gas.  Plastic bottles consume enough oil every year to run 1.5 million cars.

The majority of plastics are made with oils from non-renewable energy sources like oil and natural gas. However, there has been a lot of pressure on plastic companies to develop more eco-friendly plastics. As a result, many companies and researchers have begun experimenting with bio-oils to make biodegradable plastics. There have been some truly remarkable breakthroughs and they certainly have a place in the future.
