Brita filters reduce contaminants such as copper, mercury, and cadmium from tap water.  Also, the filters reduce chlorine which give water a distinct taste and odor.

Brita filters will remove a lot from your water, including heavy metals (as the previous poster mentioned.) Many of these are actually sourced from the pipes through which your water travels! Also, in addition to reducing chlorine and removing heavy metals, a Brita filter will remove organic pollutants and pesticides from your water–definitely a big plus!
