What kinds of human testing did we do during the nuclear arms race with plutonium?

During the arms race, plutonium was tested on humans a number of times.  Usually, the subjects were terminally ill, with less than 15 years left to live.  They were then injected with 2 micrograms of plutonium and monitered. It was determined that the maximum level the human body could handled was 1 microgram – if any further showed up in a person’s bloodstream, they would be relocated.
