Methylmercury is one chemical found in fish in California, especially near the San Francisco Bay and the Delta. High levels of methylmercury can cause nervous system disfunction and fatigue. PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls have also been found in California fish. PCBs were once used in plastics and electrical transformers, and levels are highest in fish that have a high fat content and those that tend to eat other fish. California claims it is unlikely you will see any symptoms of PCBs from eating the fish, but high concentrations can harm the nervous, digestive and immune systems.
