What kinds of gases are in the sewers of large cities?

    Generally methane, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide are in city sewer systems due to the waste flowing through them. These gases are toxic and it is dangerous to be in the sewer when these levels are high. Hydrogen sulfide is responsible for the distinct smell.
