Harp seals eat mainly fish and crustaceans. They’ll eat a large variety of fish. About 70 percent of fish and invertebrates are in a seal’s diet. They are opportunistic hunters and will eat large quantities of food at once. Harp Seals prefer codfish, which might contribute to their declining population.
The type of fish seals eat is dependent on the habitat in which the seal is living. Some fish that seals eat include krill, herring, founder, and salmon. Seals will also eat squid and mollusks and some kinds of seals can eat penguins.
