Geese and ducks provide the majority of down feathers used in clothing, sleeping bags, pillows, bedding, etc. Down is a specific type of feather, however, which baby birds are covered in before they grow their adult feathers. They also form a layer underneath these larger feathers as down is particularly good at insulating heat. 90% of down used in products is plucked after the birds have been slaughtered. The most valuable type of down comes from the Eider duck which lives in Iceland and this product is called Eiderdown. 70% of the down used around the world comes from China.
